The boat is called a Class Globe 5.80. The ‘5.80’ references the length of the boat which is 5.8m or 19 ft. The Mini Globe Race 2025 will be the first of its kind and a world first as the Class Globe 580 will be the smallest boats ever to race around the world.
The Mini Globe Race will be single handed and have several stopping points. It crosses the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans and finishes back at the Atlantic. It will last approximately one year.
The 5.80 are a new design made of timber and marine plywood and are designed so that people like me can build them from home. They are currently being built in 27 countries. To qualify myself and Little Wren for the Mini Globe Race I will be sailing in the Globe 580 Transat across the Atlantic from Portugal to Antigua leaving on 28th December 2024. There will be between 15 and 20 Class Globe 580s lining up for for the Transat and MGR.
