Why am I sailing around the world?
In my late 50s I was looking for a challenge and adventure that my working life had not given me. Sailing gives me a mental and physical freedom I have struggled to find elsewhere. There is a simple beauty about the concept of building a small, ecologically friendly boat and sailing it by wind power around the world. I hope the experience will bring me new practical skills in the workshop and I will learn more about myself both physically and mentally during the many months at sea.
I got a taste for longer distance sailing when crewing on a 60ft clipper from Oban in Scotland to Iceland a few years back. After that trip I decided to learn how to sail by the book and immersed myself in RYA theory and practical courses progressing to a professionally endorsed seafarer’s qualification of RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore. I am also a RYA Cruising Instructor teaching students to become skippers.
One night in January 2022 after a steadying and very large whisky I pressed the confirm button on my banking app and bought the timber for the construction of my 5.80 Mini from ClassGlobe 5.80 – Fyne Boat Kits The adventure had begun.
