Stage 1: Making frames

It’s February 2022 and the build has begun. Thanks to the Fyne Boats team for getting me underway. I admit, it was a little concerning that I am to try to make a boat that is to take me around the world out of the wood in my trailer – it looks very small!

The first part of the process is to build seven frames. These are the vertical sections around which the rest of the boat is built. The frames are made of lengths of timber, plywood panels and small gussets to strengthen the joints.

The last part of this process is to build the transom (back of the boat) and then sand everything down.

Notes

“I started with frame E which was the smallest and most straight forward.  Once I had got over my fears of mixing and using epoxy it was quite straight forward.  I had to move into the house as the temperature was too cold in the garage.  I used the CNC cut kit and the angles and lengths needed only marginal adjustment in the odd place.  With hindsight I spent too much time fussing over the odd millimetre.  When you realise how much brute force is needed to put some of the stringers in place you will see why!

The build time was about a day per frame.  I could have gone quicker but was restricted on space.”
